I’m captivated by the continuum of meaning across the spectrum of spoken word to script to visual art. At the foundation of this meaning is the concept of ‘word’ and its importance to our sense of self and the human condition.
For me ‘word’ is what makes us believe we’re at the centre of the Universe and gives us choice. It allows us to create the future and shape the past but can’t describe the instant of the here-and-now. This state seems positioned as an infinitely thin layer between our narratives of the past and future.
These narratives extend, filaments of imagination from the here-and-now, into the wash of time, touching, entering and leaving each other. With death approaching they shrink back until, at that ultimate moment, they become the here-and-now.
Words as script are symbols and shapes that together give meaning. My pictures are conglomerations of symbols, a mass of ‘hieroglyphics’ that capture my feelings and experiences, that shape my way of seeing things around me. R.H.
